Chisel Heat Treatment Process -- The Most Critical Step in Breaker Chisel Manufacturing
Every hydraulic breaker chisel we produce passes through our in-house heat treatment line — and this is where a good chisel becomes a great one. Proper heat treatment transforms raw forged steel into a tool that can withstand thousands of high-impact cycles on granite, concrete, and reinforced demolition material without chipping, blunting, or breaking.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Pre-Heating & Loading
Each chisel is first inspected for surface integrity after forging, then vertically loaded into our pit-type quenching furnaces using overhead cranes. Vertical positioning ensures uniform heat distribution along the entire working length of the tool, eliminating weak spots that can cause premature failure.
2. High-Temperature Austenitizing
The furnace is brought to a precisely controlled temperature (typically 860–920°C, depending on steel grade) and held for a calculated soak time. This step refines the grain structure of the steel and prepares it for quenching. We use thermocouple monitoring on every batch to guarantee temperature consistency — no guesswork, no shortcuts.
3. Quenching
Once the target temperature and soak time are reached, each chisel is rapidly quenched in polymer solution or oil. The controlled cooling rate locks in a hard martensitic structure at the surface while maintaining a tough, shock-resistant core. This is the step that gives our chisels their signature hardness — HRC 58–62 on the working end.
4. Tempering
After quenching, the chisels go through a tempering cycle at a lower temperature (typically 200–280°C). Tempering relieves internal stress built up during rapid cooling and fine-tunes the balance between hardness and toughness. The result: a chisel hard enough to stay sharp on abrasive rock, yet ductile enough not to snap under sudden impact.
5. Post-Treatment Inspection
Every batch undergoes hardness testing using a Rockwell hardness tester, and selected pieces go through deeper metallurgical analysis. Only chisels that meet our hardness and case-depth specifications move on to the final machining and finishing stages.
Equipment & Capacity
Our workshop is equipped with multiple pit-type quenching furnaces and dedicated tempering furnaces, supported by 5-ton overhead cranes for safe and efficient material handling. We process chisels ranging from 45mm to 210mm shank diameter — covering every popular breaker model from Montabert, Atlas Copco, Rammer, Indeco, JCB, Daemo, Komatsu, and more.
